Cuvaison's 400-acre estate in Carneros includes 280 acres under vine. Cuvaison also owns 170 acres on Mt. Veeder in Napa Valley, with 40 acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon. The first harvest for Mt. Veeder was in September 2002. Thomas Cottrell and Thomas Parkhill, two Silicon Valley engineers, founded Cuvaison in 1969. In 1974, New York publisher Oakleigh Thorne, owner of Commerce Clearing House, purchased Cuvaison. The current owners, the Swiss Schmidheiny family, then purchased Cuvaison in 1979. The Schmidheiny's also purchased the 400-acre Carneros estate in 1979.
